New Years Eve Get Together!!!!!

Hi all,Lee Bateman has asked me to inform you all that a get together for all the families is being planned for New Years Eve!
Anyone interested in going along to the upstairs function room of the Mumbles Conservative club (even if just for an hour or so) should get in touch with Lee and Tracy as they need to have an idea of numbers in order to plan cost of DJ etc.
Lee estimates a family cost of £15 should do it,with everyone attending taking along some buffet style food etc.
Its a really nice idea if you don't already have plans as it allows the adults and kids to enjoy a great social occasion without much expense!!

Lee's mobile no is 07743559051

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU ALL AND HAPPY NEW YEAR TO THOSE OF YOU WHO CAN'T MAKE IT !!

Dog Fight In Fall Bay (Sunday 7th Dec)

We all enjoyed a superb game of rugby this morning, down at F.B. It turned out to be a very close contest with the forwards slugging it out throughout!! Both defences were tight and there was very little opportunity for our silky backs to do any damage.
Sam Jones got our first try, playing up the slope, showing great power and determination to force his way over the line.George Jawad powered his way over twice in the second half to bring the scores level at 15 all, with a good five minutes left to play.
Needless to say, the last few moments were very tense, with both sides pushing for the vital winning score and our defence in particular ,was quite simply immense!!! Everyone put their bodies on the line as F.B came at us and it looked as if they were going to sneak over in the corner with the ref already having called 'last play', but Harry saw the danger and slammed the would be scorer into touch right on the try line with a crunching hit!!
All the coaches were extremely proud of the boys and feel we are building something pretty special with this squad. They are a great bunch of lads and have really started to play for each other.
Well done to all of you, have a nice rest over Christmas and lets see what we can achieve in 2009!!

Final score 15-15
tries: Sam, George J (2)
cons none attempted

MOM was Rhydian George (he was everywhere!!--- as usual)

LAND OF THE GIANTS?

This weekend we came up against a genetically modified team from Pencoed who fielded a very large pack. We were under pressure right from start and at one point the pitch resembled a battlefield with several Mumbles players having to leave the action.
Despite conceding some early tries the Stingrays tackled bravely and played some good rugby throughout the match scoring 2 tries in the second half through Connor and George.
No doubt it was a very tough morning but the coaches were heartened with the commitment shown by the boys to the very end.

Stingrays 38 South Gower 5

A muddy morning over at Bish with plenty to play for against our local rivals South Gower. Certainly not a day for pretty rugby and the forwards tore into the Gower pack straight from the start. With the pack dominating throughout, Stingrays recorded a comfortable victory. More of the same will be required against a very good Pencoed side next week!!!!

Stats from Sunday 16th Nov

Sharks 26 Dunvant 21
A gritty performance resulted in a deserved win in the first match of the morning.Tries from Ewan,George J,Gethin and Tom and conversions from Callum and Jack (2) ensuring some pay-back from the week before.
Stingrays 21 Dunvant (A) 63
A tough encounter against a very good, well organised side. The forward battle was pretty much even, the difference being three or four very good runners in the opposition ranks. In truth,we were not at our best defensively and allowed their ball carriers too much time and space, making life very difficult for ourselves. As a result,we didn't make the tackles we should have and paid a heavy price with most of tries conceded, individual efforts from long range!!
Tackle practice will be a priority over the next few weeks!
Tries -: Gareth,Harry (2) cons -: Callum (3)
Man of the match was awarded to Tom Glover for his solid and totally committed performance in the first match. He also scored another well deserved try! Well done mate!
Thanks to all the parents for what was a great vocal support again!
SPECIAL THANKS TO ALL OF YOU WHO MADE THE EFFORT TO COME BACK TO THE CLUB POST MATCH.ITS IMPORTANT FOR TEAM BONDING AND BUILDING!!!!

TOUGH DAY AT UNDERHILL ! ( SUN 9th NOV)

We arranged two matches for the Sharks this weekend to overcome the lack of training and matches over the last few weeks. Unfortunately this proved to be a tough day for the boys in the wind and the rain at Underhill with the Sharks going down 69-0 to Dunvant and 58-0 to South Gower. The results don't reflect the effort the boys put in as we had only 10 boys to cover both matches.
The Sharks kept going till the very end of the second game and despite the losses there were some good performances especially the running of George Peters in the backs and Jack Jones's passing under pressure. Hopefully there will be brighter days for the Sharks in the near future but the boys can be proud of the commitment they showed on Sunday.

Training News

TRAINING WILL BE ON WED AS USUAL,WEATHER PERMITTING!!!

Vardre Match stats! (Sun 9th Nov)

Stingrays produced a superb performance up in Vardre on Sunday, running in 12 tries on the way to an impressive 82 point haul.Every player had a great game, the forwards were direct and powerful and the backs were slick and clinical.To0 many highlights to mention them all really, but one try in particular saw some tremendous driving and rucking lead to quick ball for the backs, who created a flowing move, drawing their markers allowing Ewan to cut the line at speed from fullback to score an outstanding touch down.(virtually the whole team were involved in the move!!).A pleasure to watch boys!!!

final score Vardre 7 Stingrays 82

tries: Connor,Ewan (2),Gareth (3),George (3),Harry,Joe Phillips(2)
conv: Callum (7),Connor (4)

Man of the match was awarded to Gareth Lewis for a commanding performance in the heart of the pack.Well done mate, going great guns!

Result and News from the Gowerton game

We saw a great game of rugby this morning! A fiercely contested forward battle and some lovely back play by both sides ensured a close contest. Gowerton got the first try and conversion to take an early 7 nil lead, but our forwards took control resulting in some powerful bursts from all our pack. Then, from some good ruck play, quick ball enabled our back line to put Harry in to space and he went on a mazy, unstoppable run to score in the corner. 7 - 7 at half time!
Stingrays continued to dominate a strong Gowerton pack early in the second half, the pressure resulting in a powerful burst from George J who bashed his way over to put us in front. Connor added the conversion to make it 14-7 .
The boys were on a roll now and shortly after Tom went on a storming run to surge his way through for a well deserved superb score, Connor adding the conversion once more to take us into a 21-7 lead.
Gowerton got another try right at the end, from a scrappy lineout close to our line when we failed to clear the ball from behind our try line. Final score 21-14! A well deserved, hard earned win, and all the coaches told the boys how proud of them we were.
Thanks very much to Stuart for refereeing (AGAIN) and thanks on behalf of the team, to all the parents for a very vocal support!
Many thanks to all of you who made the effort to come to the club post match. It was great to see the boys sat in a group talking about their win and clearly enjoying the taste of a sweet victory!!!
Man of the match was awarded to Rhydian (The RIPPER) George for a superb "pain in the backside/in your face" type performance from start to finish! Well done mate.
Also, the Player of the month (October) award was given to Joe Phillips in recognition of the great start to the season he has had. Well done Joe, keep up the good work mate!

Match report from Skewen

Stingrays put in a solid all round performance again this morning, running out a comfortable 74 nil win. Some good forward play resulted in plenty of clean ball for the backs to stretch their legs a bit, allowing them to contribute 8 tries out of the total of 12!!!
Tries: Callum,Connor (2),Ewan (2),George J (3),Harry (3), Rhydian
Conv: Callum (5),Connor,Joe
Man of the match was awarded to Flynn

Next week will present a tougher challenge as we travel to play our friends from Penclawdd,so we'll need another solid platform and a bit more organisation if we're to come away with the spoils. The main thing, is that all the boys seem to be enjoying their rugby and we have a great team spirit!!! Keep it up lads!
TRAINING ON WEDNESDAY ,UNDER THE FLOODLIGHTS AS USUAL THIS WEEK!!!!!!!!

Squad for Skewen game this Sunday

Unfortunately some of the boys will have to miss out this week as we only have one match planned. As you know, we tried to include everyone last week, but we as coaches feel that more than 5/6 replacements per game is just too many and doesn't benefit anyone.
Obviously,EVERYONE is welcome to come to ALL matches and support whichever team we put out, as team building off the pitch is just as important as on it!!!
Starting from this week, the boys who are not involved will, wherever possible, be involved the following week. We are also trying to increase the no. of fixtures we have, to accommodate the entire squad on a more regular basis. This is something we need to do because next year the game jumps to 15 a side and we need to develop a full squad,so please bear with us as we try to encourage all the boys to play to the best of their ability.
As usual, anyone definitely not available should let us know before the FRIDAY deadline if possible.
This weeks squad;
Forwards:- George J,Gareth,Tobias,Joe Phillips,Rhydian
Gethin, Tom,Michael
backs :- Harry,Callum,Ewan,Jake,Tomos
Connor,James,George Peters

SEE YOU ALL SUNDAY!!! MEET 10-15 AT SKEWEN !!!

Sunshine Rugby In Bonymaen: Bonymaen 0 Sharks 25

Well,on a gloriously sunny morning after waiting for over an hour and a half, we eventually had a game of rugby!!!(not very well organised I'm afraid)
It was a good opportunity to give all the squad some game time and all the boys played well in what turned out to be a very comfortable win 25 points to nil.
The try scorers were Callum,Connor,Ewan,Jack and Jake (no conversions were attempted).
Unfortunately we were only able to play ten minutes in the second half because there was an under 16 cup game waiting to follow on, so we were constantly being asked to speed things along.
Man of The Match was awarded to Morgan Barry for a great performance in the second row with strong running, crunching tackles and plenty of determination.Well done, keep it going!!

Friday, 10 October 2008

Sunday Bony Sunday!!!!

As you all know,we are away to Bonymaen this Sunday. Please try to be there by no later than 10-15 to allow adequate time to warm up and organise our plan of attack!!
There will only be one game this weekend so we will do our best to give game time to as many of the boys as possible, without causing too much disruption to our strategies and patterns of play.We are keen to develop ALL the boys to the best of their ability and will endeavour to arrange extra games in the coming weeks to facilitate this aim,so please bear with us.
If someone misses out one week we will make sure they are involved the next week etc. etc.
Please make sure you confirm availability via text for this weeks game.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Match Reports and Stats for Sun 28th Sept

What a feast of running rugby we had today!! The sun shone brightly and so did the Sharks and Stingrays. Some of the play was simply wonderful, with great running, superb offloads and bone crunching tackles galore.

The SHARKS got the ball rolling with a tough game against a good team from Dunvant and after a slow start, played some cracking stuff with some powerful running and passing out of the tackles resulting in some really nice tries. The second half was a very close encounter in which we took hold of the game and created some quality scores.Unfortunately,we'd left ourselves a bit of a mountain to climb, but the boys dug in and showed great commitment right to the final whistle.Well done to you all!!

Final Score: SHARKS 42 Dunvant 76

Tries: Ewan, James, Joe Phillips, Morgan, Oliver and Tomos

Cons : Ed, Ewan, Jack (2), Joe Phillips (2)

The STINGRAYS put in another strong performance against what was a good Uplands side.It was pleasing to see good organisation in both attack and defence with some good hands, powerful running and big hits!!.Rucks were fiercely contested and the boys certainly had to put their bodies on the line.It was a really exciting game with both teams prepared to play with width and get their runners into space. The boys are really starting to play for each other and enjoy their rugby.Well done guys-keep it goin!!

Final score: STINGRAYS 42 Swansea Uplands 31

Tries : Connor, Ewan (2), Harry (3)

Match Report and Stats

Stingrays got the season off to a great start at Underhill, with a seven try win over Waunarlwydd. The boys played with great awareness and structure, with the forwards setting the platform for some nice back play.Ball retention in the rucks was excellent,as was the counter rucking when Waun went to ground. All the team tackled well and the backs ran with great determination into the spaces.
We did spill the ball a little too much as a result of not carrying with both hands, but some of the support play was a joy to watch. On the whole, a great start with plenty to work on ahead of next weeks game against Swansea Uplands.
Sam Jones sustained a nasty looking injury half way through the first half and was taken to hospital with a suspected dislocation/break.He unforunately fell awkwardly onto his arm when tackled in full charge, and was clearly in pain.We all wish him well and hope he's back on the pitch in Mumbles colours soon.

STATS - try scorers; George Jawad (3),Joseph Phillips (1),Harry Davies (1),Jake Davies (1) and Connor Bateman (1)
no conversions were attempted!!
Well done to all the squad for a great start to the new season.See you in training on Wednesday .

Season 2008/09 Fixtures

The Sharks and Stingrays will kick off the new season with a home game against Waunarlwydd on 21st September.

We then host our friends from Swansea Uplands (anyone know a good ref??!) on the 28th, before completing the hat trick of home games on 5th October against what is sure to be a very strong Fall Bay side.

Our first away game will be against Bonymaen a week later on Oct 12th.
